An Action Hero - An Absolute Fun Ride !

Image
Right at the beginning of the film Action Superstar Manaav is shooting an action scene in Haryana, The scene requires him to be angry, after all “Bhai ke khoon ka badla lee raha hoon”  - but he just can’t seem to get angry. “gussa hi nahin aa raha” he says to his manager. The scene perfectly foreshadows the rest of the film as Bhoora played by the magnificent Jaideep Alhawaat goes all out against manaav to take revenge for his brother’s death and not being able to get angry is a problem he doesn’t have. An Action Hero is a story about Maanav – A Youth Icon. A Superstar. An Action Hero. Maanav is at the peak of his career when a stray incident involving a local politician’s younger brother gets out of hand. Manaav is now on the run, with each passing moment, every option, every resource he has is vanishing, just as his public persona in hands of the judgemental media. As the walls close in on him. He has no option to become a “Real life Action Hero” to survive and get back his life.

The Best English films of 2021

Image
So many English films didn't release in India, especially in the times we live in. So you have to wait for it come out in any of the streaming platforms. Many times, they just aren’t released on OTT as well. Case in point - Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch or Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza. So making the Best English films of the year list becomes tricky because you are limited to the movies that released in India.  So anyway, here is the list of my top 5 English films of the year, from the movies I got the opportunity to watch Don't want to read, Watch the video instead   5. Last night at Soho To categorize this Edgar Wright film as a horror film, might not be appropriate – yes there are some horror elements, but its not a horror film... its not a comedy either, a time travel drama – maybe.. but then it also has a suspense and psychological angel to it.. It is this bhelpuri that makes Last night at soho a fantastic watch. In the hands of a lesser director t

2021 - A year of the Regional Cinema

Image
It won’t be an overstatement to make that in the last 2 years Regional Cinema has overtaken Hindi Cinema both in terms of pure quality and innovation. While serious film lovers always knew the power of regional cinema. So many national award winning films have been from south india. So many internationally acclaimed films have come from here. But it was always some people. The mass audience shift to regional content was triggered primarily by the unprecedented success of SS Rajamouli’s Bahubali whose iconic dialogues and imagery captured the imagination of the entire nation. The sequel Bahubali 2 is the highest grossing film of India.   Infact 2 regional films occupy the top 5 positions.  The second is Rajnikant’s sequel to Robot. (2.0) This mass audience moment and recognition of Regional cinema especially south indian cinema has made people sit up and take notice.  everyone wants a piece of the pie now. My Favorite Hindi films of 2021

Its time to look back at the year – to the movies, tv series which kept us entertained and gave us the necessary dosage of sanity. It has been a disastrous year for Bollywood. Both in terms of business as well as in terms of quality. While regional cinema surged – especially Malayalam, Bollywood was left picking the pieces… but even in many duds that the industry doled out… there were some which deserved praise. Don't want to read - Watch the video instead So here is a list of my favorite Hindi Movies of the year 2021. 5) Shershaah This Biopic based on the Short but large life of Captain Vikram Batra was the surprise hit of the year. Shershaah starts off slow.  The movie gives us a back story of the captain. His family, friends and love interest.  This takes up most part of the 1st half, however once this is out of the way, Then the movie picks up pace and really comes into his own in the second half when we enter the warzone.  It is also in the second half that Sid Malhotr

Dolly Kitty aur woh chamakte sitari - Konkana sen's brilliance doesn't save this mess !

Actually its refreshing to see that the guys who gave us regressive stuff on TV like Nagin, Vish Kanya  are the same guys who are backing women directors to tell modern day realistic stories about women. but noble intentions aside agar aapki film aachi nahin hai, toh bolna toh padega Balaji telefilms choices on TV vs their choices of films deserves a separate blog in itself...  My video Review of Dolly Kitty aur woh chamakte sitare Anyway, back to Dolly and Kitty which released on NETFLIX. Dolly Kitty are 2 women who seek the simple pleasures of life - but in their own ways Dolly like many women out there has mastered the art of faking Faking Happiness -  in a joyless, sexless and loveless marraige  Faking Indifference -  towards her mother who abandoned her as a child for living a life of love Faking Ignorance -  as she sees her son who clearly likes to dressing up as a girl and loves playing with dolls  So it comes as no surprise when she fakes laughs and brushes aside Kitty's re

83 - A film that keeps emotion at the center.

83 was ready to release as of April 10, 2020 – that’s almost 2 years ago. While almost all producers decided to release their movies on OTT, Kabir Khan held back. –  Kabir Khan said - "We will wait for theatres to open" Watching this film in theatres today, I realize why he said that – This movie… is a Shared experience, An experience that you can only get in cinema halls. We all know the story of how the Indian cricket team won the 1983 world cup. It’s a watershed moment that changed Indian cricket forever and sowed the seed for India become the cricketing juggernaut that it is today.  Sitting in 2021, It is hard to imagine an Indian team not having a team bus on their arrival at any country, or Indian cricket captain cleaning his own whites to avoid paying for laundry But it happened and it is in showcasing such moments that 83 the movie really shines through.  My Review of the movie on Youtube   In the first few scenes itself Kabir Khan is able to transport you 40 year
